# Supplements for bad breath: mint, clove and one probiotic

3. Supplements for bad breath: mint, clove and one probiotic

Most tooth supplements promise fresh breath somewhere on the page. We checked what each label actually puts toward it, and set that next to what the American Dental Association says causes the smell.

Short answer

Most of what these supplements put toward fresh breath is flavor: peppermint, wild mint or clove. The ADA says mouthwash and mints can mask bad breath but that it's "only a temporary solution", and that the real causes are mouth bacteria, dry mouth, food, gum disease, smoking or another health problem. The one breath-linked ingredient here in a stated amount is GumAktiv's 20 mg of Streptococcus salivarius, and its page shows no breath data. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are still the ADA's first answer.

## Products on this site that contain it

- ### GumAktiv

**Best for:** people who want an oral probiotic with Streptococcus salivarius in a stated amount

    #### Pros

    - 20 mg of Streptococcus salivarius on the label
    - Also names L. paracasei, L. reuteri and B. lactis BL-04
    - A tablet you let dissolve in your mouth

    #### Cons

    - The label doesn't name the S. salivarius strain
    - No breath data on the page
    - Peppermint oil adds flavor, so fresher breath right after isn't proof of anything

**Verdict**The closest thing on this site to a breath-focused probiotic. Think of it as an add-on to brushing and flossing, not a fix.

## What causes bad breath, according to the ADA

The American Dental Association starts with bacteria: bad breath "can happen anytime thanks to the hundreds of types of bad breath-causing bacteria that naturally lives in your mouth." Saliva matters too, because it "works around the clock to wash out your mouth", so a dry mouth smells worse.

Food plays a part, and so does smoking. And the ADA flags two things a supplement can't touch: bad breath that won't go away "can be a warning sign of advanced gum disease", and it can come from "a sinus condition, gastric reflux, diabetes, liver or kidney disease."

## How to read "fresh breath" on a label

### Flavor isn't a fix

Mint and clove make your mouth taste fresh for a while. The ADA calls masking bad breath "only a temporary solution."

### Look for a stated amount

GumAktiv is the only one that gives a number for its breath-linked ingredient. Everything else is a name with no dose.

### Ask where the claim comes from

None of these pages shows a breath test of its own product. A claim with nothing behind it is marketing.

## What the ADA tells you to do

"Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily with floss to get rid of all that bacteria." To get saliva going, it suggests foods that need a lot of chewing, like carrots or apples.

If bad breath sticks around, "make an appointment to see your dentist." And if your mouth checks out fine, the dentist may send you to your regular doctor, because the cause may not be in your mouth at all.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do probiotics help bad breath?**

Some strains have been studied for it, but none of the products we reviewed shows breath data for its own formula. GumAktiv is the only one with a breath-linked species (Streptococcus salivarius) in a stated amount.

**What is the best supplement for bad breath?**

There isn't one we can point to with evidence behind it. If you want a probiotic anyway, GumAktiv at least tells you how much S. salivarius you're getting.

**Why does my breath still smell after mints?**

Because mints cover the smell for a while. The ADA points to the bacteria, a dry mouth, gum disease or another health problem as the actual cause.

**When should I see a dentist about bad breath?**

When it doesn't go away with good brushing and flossing. The ADA says constant bad breath can be a warning sign of advanced gum disease.
